Introducing Guri Bori
Guri Bori is a ancient Japanese metalworking technique from the 17th century, developed by Denbei Shoami in Akita Prefecture and originally used on samurai sword fittings.
The method of layering contrasting non-ferrous metals such as copper, Shakudo, and silver, then carves into the billet to reveal flowing, sculptural patterns.
“Guri” (倶利) refers to a traditional Japanese decorative motif of interlocking, flowing, scroll-like patterns often used in metalwork and carving, and “Bori” (彫り) is the Japanese term for carving or engraving, referring to the act of cutting or sculpting into a material’s surface. the name reflects its distinctive swirling forms inspired by Chinese Guri lacquerware. Over time, the technique developed through forging and carving, laying the foundation for the creation of Mokume Gane today.
Guri Bori remains valued in fine jewellery for its depth, texture, and uniquely individual character.
